William B. Cole Consultants CEO Bill Cole, MS, MA is interviewed
as a sport psychology consultant for the December 16, 2011 issue
of The Viking, Palo Alto High School Sports News.
Bill Cole, MS, MA was interviewed as a sport psychology consultant
for the December 16, 2011 issue of The Viking, Palo Alto
High School Sports News, in an article entitled Finding the Zone.
Mr. Cole is the founder of the International Mental Game Coaching
Association, and has worked as an NCAA Division I head coach,
a sport psychology coach for the Stanford University Baseball
and the Israeli Davis Cup Tennis Team and the mental game consultant
for the Irish National Cricket Team. Cole has served as a sports
psychology consultant for various elite level athletes, including
2006 Olympic Gold Medalist and two-time world curling champion
Russ Howard.
In this interview Mr. Cole answered questions about the importance
of the zone and its paradoxes for athletic performance. Mr. Cole
was quoted as saying: "The zone is something that is prevalent
in every human activity. Musicians get into it, dancers dancing
to the beat get there, people sitting idly tapping their foot
are in the zone too."
Mr. Cole helps high school, college, and professional athletes
find their way to peak performance.

News Release: Nov. 23, 2011 - Silicon Valley,
California
William B. Cole Consultants CEO Bill Cole, MS, MA is interviewed
as a sport psychology consultant for the September 2011 issue
of The Coaching Edge, the major sports coaching magazine
in Great Britain.
Bill Cole, MS, MA was interviewed as a sport psychology consultant
for an article entitled "Old Adages" in the September
2011 issue of The Coaching Edge, the major sports coaching
magazine in Great Britain. Bill was interviewed along with some
of the top coaches in England, such as Dr Hamish Telfer, lecturer
and former Great Britain coach; Tony Sweeney, coach to the Oxford
University Judo Club and president of The Budokwai, Britain's
premier club; and Alan Olive, UK Sport's high-performance coaching
manager.
In discussing the statement 'Champions aren't made in gyms, they're
made from something they have deep inside', Mr. Cole said: "This,
to me, says that being a champion comes from an inborn trait,
not something that can be learnt. And I don't agree. Plenty of
athletes work hard, but not all are champions. If self-discipline
was the reason for a champion winning, all the military academy
teams would never lose. There are factors far deeper for success
that can be learnt. 'If this quote means that motivation is inside
the athlete, then I agree. For champions to win consistently,
their "why" has to be big enough. They need a deep reason to train
hard and compete hard to win. That comes from inside, not from
a gym."
In discussing the statement 'You don't win silver, you lose the
gold', Mr. Cole said: "Just because someone is within striking
distance of the gold it does not mean they can win the gold...
yet. Maybe they are not ready to win at that level. Maybe they
had a lucky day to get to the silver. Maybe the field was weak.
I prefer to see this quote as a rather negative one, stating -
unfairly - that you can haughtily call a number two position athlete
or team "a loser". If that is the case, what do you call the athletes
or teams that didn't even get that far? Awful losers? Everyone
who competes is a winner, at least compared with those who do
not have the nerve to put themselves on the line."

News Release: Mar. 27, 2011- Silicon Valley,

William B. Cole Consultants CEO Bill Cole, MS, MA is interviewed
as a sport psychology consultant in The San Jose Mercury
News.
Bill Cole, MS, MA was interviewed as a sport psychology consultant
for an article entitled What Athletes Should Do When They're
Injured.
Bill was asked about the importance of the psychological aspects
of recovering from sports injuries.
From the magazine:
 |
Cupertino-based mental game coach Bill
Cole, who works much like a sports psychologist with both
injured and well athletes in improving their game and overcoming
mental roadblocks, says injured athletes need to "turn lemons
into lemonade" and explore how an injury can open up other
opportunities.
"Maybe you can study or get into other aspects of your sport
that you haven't done before," Cole says. "A tennis player
who can't compete or train because of an injury can certainly
read magazines, training books and watch videos. They can
do mental training. They can improve the nonphysical aspects
of their sport, which is huge."
Older athletes who are injured have to learn acceptance,
Cole says. They are no longer 18 years old and in top physical
shape. "When I work with older people or people who get
injured at any age, I get them to look at the bigger picture,
look at the possibilities and see what they can do to accept
where they are and move ahead," he says. A runner who can't
run but can walk a race should try to accept that, he adds.

William B. Cole Consultants CEO Bill Cole, MS, MA is interviewed
as a sport psychology consultant for the January 2011 issue
of The Coaching Edge, the major sports coaching magazine
in Great Britain.
Bill Cole, MS, MA was interviewed as a sport psychology consultant
for an article entitled All For One in the January 2011
issue of The Coaching Edge, the major sports coaching
magazine in Great Britain. Bill was interviewed along with Great
Britain's Davis Cup captain Leon Smith, former coach of number
three world-ranked ATP tennis pro Andy Murray.
Bill was asked about the importance of the psychological aspects
of team cohesion, team-building and managing big egos within
individual sports, such as in tennis in this interview.
From the magazine:
 |
Bill Cole, an internationally respected
sports psychologist and 'mental game coach', takes a stage
further. California-based Cole has worked with an incredibly
diverse range of elite sportsmen, including kick-boxers,
US champion weightlifters, the Ireland cricket team, US
Tour golfers and ATP and WTA tennis pros. "The phrase I
use (with team building) is, 'treat them fairly, but not
equally'," he says. "I will literally tell them that from
the start. For example, 'You Bob, on game day you like to
be left alone in your own world to focus, so I'm going to
give you that space. Terry, you like to have a lot of social
interaction on game day so I'm going to be getting up in
your grille, pumping you up, just like you told me you like,'
and so on. I think people can understand that.
"Without naming names, if the coach 'sells their soul' to
get the superstar on the team, now they have the devil as
their assistant coach. This player can feel like they should
expect special treatment, they start bending and breaking
rules, show up late, leave early, think things don't apply
to them. They can tear the social fabric of a team. It's
a recipe for disaster. A coach has to think, 'How do I get
the person to agree to minimise their ego, while at the
same time I stroke it? While at the same time I don't make
it too obvious that I'm stroking it because if the players
lower down get a whiff of that, now I've got a problem on
my hands even more'. You see the complexity.
"Part of the bringing them on board is to allay a lot of
those future potential problems by laying out guidelines,
processes and procedures to the team, without being heavy
handed of course.
"Basically, shine the light on how our team works, an insight
of what the experience will be like, how you could contribute
and the benefits you'd get out of the team." |

Jaya Billa, from Sacramento, California, ranked #1 in Boys
14's and 16's singles in northern California, hired Bill
Cole, MS, MA as his mental game coach.
|
News Release: June 29, 2009 - San Jose, California
#1-Ranked Junior Tennis Player Hires Bill Cole As Mental Game
Coach.
William B. Cole Consultants announces that Sacramento-based Jaya
Billa, ranked #1 in the 14's and 16's in singles and doubles in
Northern California, and top twenty in the nation, has hired Bill
Cole, MS, MA as his mental game coach.
Bill Cole, MS, MA, CEO of William B. Cole Consultants, will be
providing a complete mental training program for Jaya, including
coaching in the office, on the tennis court, by telephone and
on site the day of tournaments. Bill Cole, with over 30 years
in sports psychology, research and mental game coaching, has been
a mental game coach in over 55 sports. In tennis he has been a
world-class ATP Pro Tennis Tour sports psychology coach. In golf
he has coached players who have competed on both the men's and
women's pro tours, in the World Junior Golf Championships and
in the US Open Championships, including one player who finished
in the top 10 on the 2008 Duramed Futures Tour.
Jaya Billa commented:
"I was already very successful in junior tennis. I have been ranked
#1 in the 14's and 16's in singles and doubles in Northern California,
and top twenty in the nation. I won the San Diego Boys 14's National
Open Singles and Doubles and took third place in the Boys 16's
Copper Bowl Singles. I wanted to not only be able to maintain
the rankings I had achieved to date, but to continue to steadily
improve. The pressure is even greater once you are a top-ranked
player, and I wanted to know how to handle that pressure better. We
researched the top sports psychologists and mental training coaches
and discovered that Bill Cole had been the mental game coach to
professional players who have had wins over Pete Sampras, Andy
Roddick, Marat Safin, Michael Chang and world #4, Tim Henman.
Bill also had been an NCAA Division I College Head Coach in tennis,
the Sports Psychology Coach for the Israeli Davis Cup Team, and
had coached in the US and Europe on the ATP Tour.
I took his on-line mental game assessment and communicated with
him, and very quickly our family hired Bill. Ever since, he has
been helping us navigate the competitive world of junior tennis
at the sectional and national levels.
In just our first mental training session, I learned a huge amount
about the mental game and what I needed to do to perform to my
top abilities in competition. Since then, Bill has been an integral
part of our tennis training team. My Mom and Dad and I work with
him at his office, on the phone, at tournaments and on the lesson
court. Bill taught me about the psychology of match preparation,
concentration, how to really relax in close matches (even when
it seemed impossible to do so), to stay focused, to analyze and
solve problems on the court, mental toughness, confidence and
my ability to get into the zone.
Bill's techniques in the mental game are extremely powerful and
easy to learn. These techniques take effect immediately. I was
able to use all the techniques right away, and my game improved
a lot. I have been using the techniques in matches and the results
have shown already. I was able to stay calm, focused, and relaxed
under pressure. Bill has helped my tennis game a lot through mental
game coaching.
If you suspect that improving your mental approach to your tennis
is the missing link in your game, you are probably right. Bill
is a specialist in the mental part of tennis, in addition to having
been a very successful teaching pro, and top competitor himself.
His insights and knowledge about the upper levels of competitive
tennis are amazing. The mental training system he taught me for
reaching my inner excellence continues to be very powerful. I
use what he teaches me every day, in practices, and in matches.
If you want to take your game to the next level, I strongly suggest
you call Bill."

Bill Cole, MS, MA and Jesse Gillespie, with Jesse wearing
the Championship Belt, just after winning the WCSC California
State Professional MMA Middleweight Title, in San Francisco,
CA, May 30, 2009.
|
News Release: May 30, 2009 - San Jose,
California
William B. Cole Consultants announces that Professional MMA
fighter Jesse Gillespie, coached by William B. Cole Consultants
CEO Bill Cole, won the WCSC California State MMA Professional
Middleweight Title.
Bill Cole, MS, MA provided a complete mental training program
for Gillespie, including coaching in the office, in the gym and
at the arena the day of the fight. Cole worked with Gillespie
on virtually a daily basis to prepare him for his fight on May
30 in San Francisco, CA at the Awakening, the World Combat Sports
Challenge (WCSC) MMA event, the WCSC California State MMA Middleweight
Title. Over 5,000 people attended this event.
Jesse Gillespie is a former US Marine (who served in Bosnia/Kosovo)
and a current Full-Time Law Enforcement Officer. Jesse has been
fighting for three years and has fought around the world for the
WKA, USMF, IFMA, MTIA and Strikeforce. Jesse was a Silver Medalist
at the 2007 Police Olympics for Boxing. In 2008, Jesse was also
selected as a member of the US National Muay Thai Team, where
he was a Bronze Medalist in the Light Heavyweight Division at
the 2008 World Muay Thai Championships in Busan South Korea. Originally
a "Striker", Jesse has made the transition to MMA in the last
year and most recently fought and won for Strike Force in the
televised event at The Playboy Mansion.
Gillespie commented after winning the WCSC California State MMA
Middleweight Title:
"MMA is a very mental sport, particularly once you step into the
ring. In a contest, the importance of the mental component might
be well over 80-90%. A fighter needs strong reserves of mental
toughness, focus and the will to win.
My MMA coach and I realized I needed to raise the level of my
mental game, so he found the best trainers, coaches and consultants
around to work with me so I could prepare optimally for my televised
fight coming up in three weeks.
For mental training, he called Bill Cole, The Mental Game Coach.
I can't thank Bill enough for all his help.
The mental game training I did with Bill Cole on my mental preparation
was an important part of my overall training program for my win
(second round TKO) at The Awakening, the World Combat Sports Challenge
(WCSC) MMA event in San Francisco. I won the WCSC California State
MMA Middleweight Title in front of a crowd of over 5,000 people.
Bill went to work with me right away. I worked with him almost
daily over that time. He coached me on simple and easy to use
mind techniques I could apply right in the gym, at home, in the
locker room before the fight, on the walk into the arena and even
once my foot hit the canvas.
Just as you need to be dedicated in the gym, in running, in eating
right, and in training all aspects of the MMA game, you need to
cover all the bases by training your mind. A fighter can lose
the contest before they even step foot into the cage or the ring.
They can defeat themselves mentally before the contest even begins.
Ignoring the mental game is old school now for anyone who wants
to excel at the fight game.
Just like you train your standup game, your wrestling, or your
Jiu Jitsu, you need to train your mind. Mental game training is
an area that many fighters talk about as being important, but
few know how to train for, other than working with intensity and
dedication in the gym. Having a strong work ethic will get you
to a certain level of mental toughness and confidence, but the
mental game is far more than that. A well-prepared fighter needs
focus, relaxation under pressure, killer instinct, control over
his thoughts, and control over his emotions. Bill helped me take
all these things to the next level in my game.
Now I have a focused and extremely effective pre-event mental
readiness system that gets my mind, body and spirit ready to fight.
He helped me bring out the mental toughness and focus I needed
to achieve greatness in a pressure situation.
MMA is very much a mental game. Bill is an indispensable part
of my training arsenal. If you want to see what improving your
mental game can do for you as a fighter, I strongly suggest you
give Bill a call. He is a great investment."
Bill Cole, with over 30 years in sports psychology, research and
mental game coaching, has been a mental game coach in over 55
sports. In golf he has coached players who have completed on both
the men's and women's pro tours, in the World Junior Golf Championships
and in the US Open Championships. One of his players finished
in the top 10 on the 2008 Duramed Futures Tour.

Mental Game", and the completion of the episode, "The Mental
Game" tennis pilot.

Bill Cole Inducted Into The Buffalo Tennis Hall of Fame

On May 17, 2008 I was honored to be inducted
into the Buffalo Tennis Hall of Fame. In the late 70's I was one
of the top players in western New York State. I won the largest
doubles championship, numerous other titles, won six conference
championships in college, won money in pro events, played on television
twice, faced some very big names, and then discovered I had no
talent to continue! Actually, after playing some tour stars I
realized they are such a special breed to be able to make a living
at playing, so I redoubled my focus into teaching and coaching,
and have been very fulfilled since. Yes, that photo from my playing
days is me, but with lots more hair!

News Release: January 11, 2008 - Hollywood
California, RampItUp Productions announces it is now accepting
talent-submissions for their 2008 television pilot.
The company has begun casting and is now accepting non-union talent
submissions for the reality TV pilot, "The Mental Game", (TMG).
The pilot is an innovative program focusing on the mental game
of sports, business and life. The show will focus on how people
learn, perform and achieve greatness.
Bill Cole, MS, MA, the show's creator and host says, "Paradoxically,
the mind is the last frontier of study and control in anything
we do. Top achievers and performers know that mind power is what

the winner's circle. A strong mental game is the potent magic
behind overcoming the inevitable mental and emotional obstacles
that everyone faces in their quest for success in learning, performing
and achieving".
This interactive reality television show goes inside the mental
game of virtually everyone in sports, business and life. A large
percentage of casting will focus on athletes involved in their
day-to-day sport experience and will also include coaches, officials,
agents, managers, trainers, team owners, fans and the parents
of these accomplished athletes to discover how they approach their
sport experience from a mental perspective and how it relates
to their everyday life. The show will examine the mental and emotional
highs and lows of all athletic participants at every level including
youth, collegiate, amateur, pro, Olympic and even the weekend
warrior.
If you are an elite athlete, a weekend warrior or you know someone
who has an amazing story to tell about their personal sport experience
and life accomplishments then send storyline / bio / reel along
